Kirche Sankt Marien – Marienvorstadt 32

Vor der Stadtmauer liegt die Marienvorstadt mit der kleinen Kirche, welche 1258 erstmals erwähnt wird, aber zunächst zum Kloster Katlenburg gehört. Mit dieser Kirche verbunden sind früh eine Meierei sowie ein Hospital mit Kalande. Bedeutend ist der Marienaltar von 1517, geschaffen vom Göttinger Bildschnitzer Bartold Castrop. Als 1554 Kirche und Pfarrhaus baufällig werden, muss das Gotteshaus für etwa 100 Jahre geschlossen werden. Der Rat von Osterode übernimmt schließlich das Patronat und lässt Kirche samt Pfarrhaus instandsetzen. Zuletzt wird der Marienaltar, ausgeliehen an die ausgebrannte Aegidienkirche, zurückgeholt. 1724 kommt die wertvolle Orgel dazu, die wohl älteste Barockorgel im südniedersächsischen Raum. Die Marienkirche ist die einzige Kirche Osterodes, zu der noch ein Kirchhof gehört mit historischen Gusseisen-Kreuzen. Hat man diesen „Kirchgarten“ und die Fachwerkglockenstube hoch oben passiert, stellt sich beim Betreten des Gebäudes schnell der Eindruck ein, man sei in einer Dorfkirche zu Gast.
