Zur Erbauungszeit des Hauses 1845 (nach dem Abriss des Vorgängerbaus von 1799) muss man sich den Martin-Luther-Platz etwa dreieckig vorstellen, mit schmalem Zugang zum Kornmarkt. Die Wohnhäuser direkt am Kirchturm waren 1882 abgebrannt, und nach dem Bau der heutigen Gebäude war der Durchgang zum Kornmarkt erheblich erweitert worden. Dadurch ist eine andere Optik entstanden. Zur Zeit des Baus der beiden Häuser Nr. 3 und Nr. 5 bildeten diese beiden sozusagen die „Rückwand“ des „Drei-Eck-Platzes“, welcher damals noch Gemüsemarkt hieß. Haus Nr. 3 wurde von Fachwerkaufbau und Ausmaßen her dem Haus Nr. 5 angepasst.
Auffallend an beiden Häusern sind die über die gesamte Dachlänge laufenden Bodenbelüftungen. Ob es an der Giebelseite von Haus Nr. 3 ebenfalls wie beim Nebenbau eine Ladeluke mit Aufzugsbalken gegeben hat, um Getreide u. a. auf den Dachboden hinaufzuziehen (wie an Nr. 5 noch in Resten erkennbar), ist nicht bekannt. Auf jeden Fall ist das Haus teilunterkellert.
Interessanterweise lebte im Vorgängerbau im 16. Jh. der „Garkoch“ Winter, also zugehörig zum Ratskeller gegenüber, und im 17. Jh. war Besitzer ein Turmwächter vom Kirchturm. 1844 wohnte hier der bekannte Osteroder Fabrikant August Dieckhoff, ab 1909 folgte die Familie Habenicht. Lange Zeit gab es im Gebäude einen in Osterode bekannten Textil-Laden.
